As a launching point for westward expansion, St. Louis has drawn a diverse blend of people giving the city a unique flavor. More than 2.5 million people call the region home. The city itself adjoins, but is independent of St. Louis County, St. Charles County, Jefferson County, and Franklin county, plus five counties in Illinois including St. Clair, Madison, Monroe, Clinton, and Jersey. The total area covered is 6,125 square miles making it the 18th largest metropolitan area in the United States.
